Volume #4 | A soothing song to start your day, an exclusive Mixtape playlist for footy finals plus an infectious Indie Rock duo I'm obsessing over.
Mixtape. Words that sing in tune.
“Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you” ♪
You're back! Thank you! That brings a huge smile to my face. Mixtape started as a tiny thought bubble that was ignited by an idea to share my love of music, which ultimately led me here. I haven’t looked back… okay, only when the imposter syndrome strikes (why does that happen?!) But mostly, these past few weeks have been full of renewed energy that’s fuelling my creative self. Hallelujah!
I would love to hear from you in the comments. What are you enjoying about Mixtape? Are there any artists you would like to see featured? Remember, there’s no limits or boundaries. This little music-loving community continues to grow, as do my ideas.
Let’s hit play on another volume, shall we!
I’m sharing…

Golden Oldie |
I recently met my besties for a seaside brunch in Henley Beach (South Australia). As I entered the cafe, which was situated in a circa-1900 former character home, it was warm and cosy throughout- a welcomed feeling on a sunny but chilly spring morning. It smelt like fluffy pancakes, with views of locals walking their dogs amidst a slight sea breeze. To top it off, the song that was playing was Dream a Little Dream Of Me (Kina Grannis version).
First impressions matter. The atmosphere when I walk into any restaurant, cafe or shop sets the tone, and for me, music is something that helps to define the experience.
Now this is the calm I needed at the end of a busy week.
Make yourself a cuppa and start your day with this song, a cover of a golden oldie. Relaxed? Me too.

Artist Spotlight |
Artist: Royel Otis
Genre: Indie Rock
Region: Australia
Debut Album: PRATTS & PAIN
Play It When: On a sunny afternoon, spin this on vinyl and serve it with an Amaretto Sour. Get ready because you’ll have this album on repeat.
Feels Like: Infectious, catchy and cool.
Sounds Like: Rhythmic, vibrant, atmospheric guitar riffs, dreamy, indie rock vibes.
Top Track: Foam, Claw Foot.
Viral Moment: If you’re in Australia or frequent Indie playlists on Spotify, you may have heard their cover of Sophie Ellis Bextor’s Murder On The Dancefloor, which they performed for triple j’s Like A Version in 2022. That single went gold and Royel Otis have never looked back. They’ve produced further singles and covers, recorded their first album in London and now they’re touring the world. It’s all happening!
Surprise Fact: This duo have some quirks, one being that musician Royel Maddell tends to hide his face as much as possible, which is widely accepted by fans and all part of their band persona. There’s a certain intrigue about these two, a little bit Kurt Cobain, a little bit 70’s psychedelic rock. I’ve not seen them live (yet) however online reviews suggest the energy between them when they perform is “electric”. Works for me!

Gig Countdown |
I may never stop harping on about Missy Higgins latest album The Second Act which has hit #1 on the ARIA Charts here in Australia. It deserves all of this attention and more. She also featured in a down-to-earth chat with Abbie Chatfield on her podcast It’s A Lot where Missy revealed her kids can’t stand it when she sings. Can you imagine? I found this hilarious!
Just when I think I’ve had more than enough Missy Higgins moments to fill my millenial heart, this happens…
Missy Higgins was G Flip’s surprise guest during their set at triple j’s One Night Stand. Together, they duetted on the big stage in Warrnambool, Victoria to perform Scar and it went off! Two renowned Australian artists echoing the anthem we all know and love. Incredible. I didn’t know we needed this combo but now I can’t imagine “the return of Missy Higgins” without it. G Flip on the drums and feature vocals. Missy Higgins on the keys and vocals. A rendition like we’ve never heard before, what a treat.
Only 12 weeks until my husband and I attend A Day On The Green to see this Aussie legend perform live in our hometown. You guessed it; I can’t wait.

It’s A Hit |
Love Like This | Faith Evans
I love this song for its mesmerising beat and ability to make you shake your groove thang. Released 26 years ago by American songwriter Faith Evans, you may also recognise samples from this R&B track as inclusions in Fatman Scoop’s Be Faithful, a dance floor mainstay.
Turn the lights down and have a little groove to this one with your lover.
